At Excelsior Institute & Literacy Lab, we are committed to providing prospective students and parents with all the information they need to make informed decisions about their child's education. Whether you're curious about our curriculum, teaching methods, or enrollment process, we're here to help. Reach out to us today and let's explore how we can enhance your child's English language skills together!

English Proficiency Expectations

To ensure students are able to fully engage with the Excelsior curriculum, applicants should demonstrate foundational English proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking. Excelsior is designed for students who are ready to move beyond introductory English instruction and engage with reading, discussion, writing, and critical thinking in English.

Reading

Students should be able to independently read a short English text (approximately 200–300 words) and identify the main topic, central idea, and key supporting details.

Writing

Students should be able to respond to a simple writing prompt using complete sentences. While grammar does not need to be perfect, students should demonstrate a basic understanding of sentence structure, including nouns, verbs, capitalization, and punctuation.

Speaking & Listening

Students should be able to participate in basic English conversations, answer questions using complete sentences, express simple opinions, and follow classroom instructions delivered in English.

Please Note

Excelsior is not a beginner phonics or foundational literacy program. Students should already possess basic reading skills, including letter recognition, common spelling patterns, and the ability to decode simple English words independently. Our curriculum begins with the assumption that students are ready to apply English as a tool for learning, discussion, analysis, and communication.
