Welcome to Excelsior Institute & Literacy Lab
Day 1 At Excelsior, our curriculum is designed to develop the skills students need to thrive in an increasingly complex academic world. Through the integration of grammar, vocabulary, literature, research, writing, discussion, and presentation, students learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage thoughtfully with ideas. Each component of the program is intentionally designed to strengthen literacy, intellectual curiosity, and academic confidence while fostering a lifelong appreciation for learning.

Grammar Foundations

Students develop a strong foundation in English grammar through systematic instruction in sentence construction, parts of speech, verb conjugation, syntax, editing, and grammatical awareness. By understanding how language functions at both the sentence and paragraph level, students build the linguistic framework necessary for effective writing, communication, and academic success.

Vocabulary Development

Students learn carefully selected vocabulary connected to each week's academic theme and reading materials. Instruction focuses on spelling, word forms, usage, nuance, and contextual meaning, enabling students to strengthen both their receptive and expressive language skills while preparing for class discussions, reading analysis, and writing assignments.

Research & Nonfiction Seminar

Students engage with authentic nonfiction texts and contemporary global issues to develop literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills. Through discussion, collaboration, project-based learning, and evidence-based inquiry, students learn to analyze information, evaluate multiple perspectives, and apply academic English in meaningful real-world contexts.

Literature Seminar

Students participate in guided seminars exploring diverse literary traditions, historical periods, and cultural perspectives. Through close reading, annotation, discussion, and textual analysis, students examine literary elements such as language, symbolism, themes, characterization, rhetoric, and authorial purpose. Readings may include poetry, classical literature, contemporary works, and multicultural texts, encouraging students to develop deeper analytical thinking and a broader understanding of the human experience.
